August 2024 Jobs Day Analysis

The Joint Center analyzes the employment numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and showcases how the numbers impact Black workers. Our August Jobs Day analysis is below.

From July to August, the number of Black workers employed decreased slightly by 100,000, and the unemployment rate dropped from 6.3 percent to 6.1 percent.

In August, the unemployment rate for Black women slightly increased to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent in July; However, for Black men, it decreased to 6.5 percent from 6.9 percent in July.

The unemployment rate for young Black workers decreased to 15.3 percent, but slightly increased from 9.8 percent to 9.9 percent for all young workers.

At 8.5 percent, Black homeowners have the highest rate of late payments compared to other groups.

In July, Black renters struggled to pay their rent, as 18.8 percent reported not being caught up on last month’s rent payments, compared to 8.5 percent of white renters.
