The Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President of Policy, the Special Assistant, Policy (Special Assistant) will serve as an integral member of the growing Policy team, providing the administrative, scheduling, and programmatic support needed to advance the organization’s mission and uphold the Joint Center’s commitment to its nine cultural principles, which include: Black communities matter, mission is the metric, rigor and commitment to excellence, influence, constant feedback and growth, work-personal life balance is a professional responsibility, collaborative and respectful, leadership, we are a well-run organization, integrity.

The ideal Special Assistant is mission-driven, detail-oriented, collaborative, and thrives in high-performing environments. They are thoughtful, intellectually curious, and have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. This is an exciting role for an entry-level professional to explore and advance career interests in making an impact on Black communities through public policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide policy team project assistance and operational support, as needed, including expense report processing, scheduling meetings, managing meeting logistics and preparation, producing and processing meeting notes and next steps, and maintaining organized electronic files
  • Support the development and execution of external meetings and events on behalf of the Joint Center’s policy team, serving as a representative of the organization and its values
  • Support the Policy team by maintaining contact lists, providing daily news clips, preparing internal team meeting agendas, and tracking organizational objectives and key results using various tools such as Quorum and Asana.
  • Draft correspondence and support the execution of communications, including emails, briefing memos, and various other communications
  • Attend and take notes at congressional hearings, briefings, and other external events on behalf of the Policy team
  • Complete discrete special assignments by establishing objectives; determining priorities; managing time; gaining cooperation of others; monitoring progress; problem-solving; and adjusting plans.
  • Proactively seek out ways to support the policy team to improve the efficiency and capacity of the team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Solid planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Resourcefulness and interest in learning new systems
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • One to two years of professional experience is a plus

Compensation & Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $55k – 65k. The Joint Center offers a generous benefits package, including medical/dental/life insurance, annual leave, sick leave, and federal holidays.
