July 2024 Jobs Day Analysis
The Joint Center analyzes the employment numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and showcases how the numbers impact Black workers. Our July Jobs Day analysis is below.
From June to July, the number of Black workers employed increased by 169,000, and the unemployment rate remained at 6.3 percent.
In July, the unemployment rate for Black women decreased to 5.6 percent, and for Black men, it increased to 6.9 percent, the second highest in 2024.
The unemployment rate for young Black workers increased slightly to 15.6 percent, and decreased for all young workers to 9.8 percent.
Inflation is decreasing, but the economy is negatively impacting Black homeowners, as 8 percent were behind on last month’s mortgage, higher than other demographic groups.
Black renters struggled to pay their rent, as 21 percent reported not being caught up on last month’s rent payments, compared to 7.8 percent of white renters.
