Joint Center Speaks at CBC ALC on the Black Family Today

On Friday, September 14 during CBC ALC week, the Joint Center participated in a session organized and moderated by Tony Waller of Walmart entitled “Real Talk:  The Black Family Today.”

The panel grew out of a report that Walmart commissioned focused on the American family, which found that today’s families are very busy, need convenient healthcare and nutritious meals, and navigate opportunities and challenges of screen time and communication.  The session focused on how these and other issues affect Black families.

Panelists discussed the definition of the “Black family,” the economic status of the Black family, community connectedness, the future of the Black family, and action steps.

Participants included:

  • Trisch Smith, Edelman Executive VP & Managing Drector of Diversity & Inclusion
  • Cemeré James, VP of Policy at the National Black Child Development Institute
  • Andre Perry, David M. Rubenstein Fellow at the Brookings Institution
  • Spencer Overton, President of the Joint Center
