Joint Center Tech Director Writes Article on Meta’s Fact-Checking Decision for Tech Policy Press

Joint Center Technology Policy Director Danielle Davis published an article titled, “Hear Me Out: A Different Perspective on Meta’s Fact-Checking Decision,” in Tech Policy Press. Davis argues that while ending fact-checking altogether is a mistake, the decision does offer an opportunity to confront the flaws and inconsistencies within Meta’s existing practices. She discusses how Meta’s fact-checking approach has often been subjective and unevenly applied — from exempting politicians from scrutiny to prematurely labeling complex topics as misinformation. She challenges the notion that Meta scraping its fact-checking was the correct solution while calling for a more thoughtful and transparent approach to truth and accountability online.
