Joint Center Statement on Attempt to Dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Dr. Lisa D. Cook

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies strongly opposes President Donald Trump’s attempt to dismiss Federal Reserve Board Governor Dr. Lisa D. Cook.

Dr. Cook made history in 2022 as the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. She brought with her an extraordinary record of accomplishments — decades of scholarship on economic growth, service in multiple roles within the Federal Reserve System, and experience advising governments and institutions during global crises. She has also been deeply engaged with the public, including through the Joint Center’s Future of Black Communities Leadership Summit in 2020 and 2023.

This attack on Dr. Cook is not just about one individual. It raises a larger and urgent question: will Black leadership in America’s most vital institutions be respected and protected, or undermined and delegitimized?

The independence of the Federal Reserve is a cornerstone of our economy. Politicizing the tenure of a Federal Reserve Governor — especially one as qualified as Dr. Cook — threatens that independence and undermines confidence in the institution at a moment when stability is critically needed.

Dr. Cook has earned her place through expertise, service, and integrity. She should be allowed to carry out her responsibilities without political interference.

The Joint Center will continue to stand with Dr. Cook and with Black leaders across government who face unjust attacks. In the coming days, we will join with other civic and policy organizations to make clear that this kind of political targeting cannot be tolerated.
