Joint Center Research Cited in The Root

An op-ed by Wayne Washington for The Root cited a Joint Center report. The op-ed explained Black Americans’ voting patterns, beginning with the election of 1868.

From the article: “But many of those politicians eventually switched to the Republican Party when Democrats embraced civil rights. FDR’s successor, Harry S. Truman, desegregated the U.S. military in 1948 and backed a civil rights plank in the party’s platform. Not surprisingly, 1948 was the first year a majority of Black Americans identified themselves as Democrats, according to a study from the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.”
