The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, America’s Black think tank, provides compelling and actionable policy solutions to eradicate persistent and evolving barriers to the full freedom of Black people in America. Founded in 1970 to support newly-elected Black officials who were moving from civil rights activism into governance, we evolved to become the trusted forum for leading experts and scholars to participate in major public policy debates and promote ideas that advance Black communities. We use evidence-based research, analysis, convenings, and strategic communications to support Black communities and a network of allies.

As a Joint Center Changemaker, you will join a cadre of leaders in the private sector, partnering at the nexus of issues, including addressing historical inequality, the socio-economic advancement of African Americans and advancing best corporate practices for social good. Joint Center Changemakers will enjoy multiple opportunities to engage with Joint Center leadership, receive invitations for Joint Center convenings, early notification of research, and recognition throughout the year.

Our Work

The Joint Center’s work is grounded in high-quality research, policy recommendations and analysis, convenings, and advocacy. Areas include:

law-policy

Policy: Our policy team produces research analysis on economic, workforce, tax, and tech policy. On economic policy, we lift up the economic challenges facing Black business owners and households. Our tax policy work analyzes and identifies the effects of tax policies on Black households. Our tech policy portfolio includes analyses on challenges and opportunities facing Black communities on platform accountability, broadband access and affordability, data privacy, and algorithmic fairness.

Elevating Black Voices: Through surveys, reports, convenings, and public appearances, the Joint Center highlights the realities of the socio-economic conditions of African Americans –— and the policy solutions that will move the nation past our history of division and disenfranchisement.

Research: Our research team utilizes rigorous methodologies that address complex societal challenges and contribute to evidence-based decision-making processes. This work also includes broad analysis of race and socio-economic mobility and new insights into addressing racial inequality through economic policy

Advocating For Greater Black Representation: The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies is the leading national advocate in racial diversity as it relates to presidential appointments, congressional, and other government staffing. We are known for our publications on congressional staff diversity, our analysis of presidential appointments, and our Black Talent Initiative.

These efforts yield a unique and powerful impact. The federal government calls upon our scholars for their expertise through both public testimony and private briefings, while the media frequently relies on the Joint Center for evidence-based commentary on addressing racial inequality and to represent the perspectives of America’s Black communities in public policy debates. We are proud to have built a 50+-year reputation for timely and reliable insight into the ways in which public policy impacts America’s Black communities.
