POSITION TITLE: Managing Editor

LOCATION: Washington, DC

OVERVIEW, SALARY, & BENEFITS: This is a full-time position. The Managing Editor manages all of the written work produced by the Joint Center and is part of the leadership team of the Joint Center along with the President and the Chief Operating Officer. The salary for this position depends upon experience and comes with an excellent benefits package that includes health, vision, dental, and life insurance.     


  • Working with President, Chief Operating Officer, staff, and stakeholders to generate ideas for Joint Center products including reports, policy briefs, talking points, one-pagers, factsheets, op-eds, blog posts, press releases, memos, infographics, charts, and other materials;
  • Drafting materials and researching and identifying staff, academics, experts, and contractors to research and draft materials, including reports, policy briefs, talking points, one-pagers, factsheets, op-eds, blog posts, press releases, memos, event programs, infographics, charts, correspondence and other materials, and negotiating agreements and timelines with these authors and supervising the production process; 
  • Managing the internal review and editing process, and guiding the publication and roll-out strategy;
  • Supervising a staff person tasked with social media, website management, graphic design, and media outreach;
  • Maintaining all vendor/external writer relationships;
  • Preparing and editing grant proposals and applications, and writing and/or editing reports to government, corporate, and foundation funders;
  • Editing, rewriting, proofreading, and fact-checking all Joint Center materials, and ensuring consistency in style;
  • Understanding the past, present, and future work of the Joint Center to ensure documents effectively communicate with various stakeholders, including elected officials of color, policy experts, scholars, Hill staffers, journalists, financial supporters, board members, and others; and 
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


The Joint Center is seeking someone who is:

  • An exceptional writer: This position requires an ability to write quickly and concisely while conveying a range of facts and information to various audiences. The ideal candidate will have a body of work that includes a range of pieces—from quick 500-word columns to 10,000-word reports. The successful candidate will also have experience breaking down dense jargon—for example, theoretical economic concepts, legislative language, or demographic data—for a lay audience and elected officials. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to:
  • Vary and tailor their writing style for reports, policy briefs, data briefs, grants, blogging, press releases, etc.; and
  • Conduct policy research and provide concise, in-depth analysis and sharp, practical, and actionable policy recommendations;
  • An experienced and outstanding editor who pays attention to detail: The successful candidate will be a self-starter who has the ability to start new projects, take ownership of all aspects of the work, and complete projects on deadline. The candidate will have experience working on multiple projects at once with varying deadlines, and be comfortable with shifting priorities as circumstances require. The successful candidate will be meticulous in their work, and produce products that are thoroughly sourced and without factual errors. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to:
  • Build and manage an editorial calendar to assign, edit, and produce content;
  • Plan and approve assignments for internal and external writers and editors;
  • Control schedules and enforce deadlines (for writers, photographers, editors, etc.);
  • Edit copy for compliance with policies, style and tone; and
  • Resolve issues as they arise.

A minimum of three years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s or law degree is preferred.  Previous experience in journalism, public policy, familiarity with state and local legislative processes, and a passion for social justice are pluses.
