
The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute held its 2011 PLACE MATTERS National Conference on September 7, 2011, at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, DC. The Joint Center's PLACE MATTERS initiative, begun in 2006, seeks to build the capacity of local leaders to identify and address social determinants of health in their communities. This event addressed the the relationship between place and health, particularly as it pertains to racial and ethnic health inequities. Speakers and honorees in attendance included Dr. Gail Christopher of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Honorable Donna M. Christensen (D-VI), Larry Adelman of California Newsreel, and Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post.
