The National Medical Association held its Fourth Annual Scientific Symposium on January 9, 2010. The event was convened at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, FL. This year's topic was "The Economic Impact of Health Reform." Dr. Brian Smedley delivered the key note address, speaking on the Economic Costs of Health Disparities.
The objectives of the Symposium included:
- Documenting the experiences of health care providers, health institutions, insurance industries, and policy-makers with health care reform
- Discussing the potential economic effect on individuals, providers, hopsitals, insurance and the nation
- Brainstorming recommendations on how to reform our healthcare system
- Providing an assessment of how health reform will work for patients, providers, and other institutions
- Examining the potential impact of health reform on health disparity
- Educating the audience about how they can become involved in the health reform debate locally and nationally
