Joint Center on Baltimore

Joint Center Research and Convenings: The Joint Center is organizing a roundtable of 30 leading state legislators and major city council presidents of color on June 10 to talk criminal justice/policing issues, and we’ll partner with a foundation to host a meeting of experts addressing a more holistic approach to criminal justice on June 17.   Recognizing that the problems in Baltimore and many cities are bigger than criminal justice, on June 11 and 12, the Joint Center will bring together experts on financial services (e.g. payday lending) and workforce development in emerging industries like technology and energy to discuss these key issues.  This 2012 Joint Center Place Matters report on racial and neighborhood disparities in Baltimore found that the average life expectancy in the most distressed Baltimore census tracts was 29.6 years shorter than those in the census tracts with the highest life expectancies, and made several policy recommendations to address these issues.
