52 Organizations Ask New Senators to Hire Top Staff of Color

Last week, 52 organizations sent a letter to the six incoming Members of the U.S. Senate (from CA, IL, IN, MD, NV, & NH) asking that they interview and hire candidates of color for top staff positions in their Washington, DC offices.

Lack of diversity among top staff is a significant challenge in the U.S. Senate. According to a Joint Center report on the issue, people of color account for over 36 percent of the population of the United States, but represent only 7.1 percent of top Senate staff in personal offices of U.S. Senators.
